The Crucifixion
Matthew 21 : The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9-13; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19)
- 1And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem,
- and came unto Bethphage,
- unto the mount of Olives,
- then Jesus sent 2 disciples,
- 2saying unto them,
- Go into the village that is over against you,
- and straightway ye shall find an ass tied,
- and a colt with her:
- loose them ,
- and bring them unto me.
- 3And if any one say aught unto you, ye shall say,
- The Lord hath need of them;
- and straightway he will send them.
- 4Now this is come to pass,
- that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying,
- 5Tell ye the daughter of Zion,
- Behold, thy King cometh unto thee,
- Meek, and riding upon an ass,
- And upon a colt the foal of an ass.
- 6And the disciples went,
- and did even as Jesus appointed them,
- 7and brought the ass,
- and the colt,
- and put on them their garments;
- and he sat thereon.
- 8And the most part of the multitude spread their garments in the way;
- and others cut branches from the trees,
- and spread them in the way.
- 9And the multitudes that went before him,
- and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David:
- Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;
- Hosanna in the highest.
- and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David:
- 10And when he was come into Jerusalem,
- all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this?
- 11And the multitudes said,
- This is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.
Zechariah 9 : Zion’s Coming King (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19)
9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass. 10And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off; and he shall speak peace unto the nations: and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for thee also, because of the blood of thy covenant I have set free thy prisoners from the pit wherein is no water. 12Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope: even to-day do I declare that I will render double unto thee. 13For I have bent Judah for me, I have filled the bow with Ephraim; and I will stir up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and will make thee as the sword of a mighty man.
The Lord will Save His People (Isaiah 45:14-25)
14And Jehovah shall be seen over them; and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord Jehovah will blow the trumpet, and will go with whirlwinds of the south. 15Jehovah of hosts will defend them; and they shall devour, and shall tread down the sling-stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, like the corners of the altar. 16And Jehovah their God will save them in that day as the flock of his people; for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted on high over his land. 17For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! grain shall make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins.
Mark 11 : The Triumphal Entry
1And when they draw nigh unto Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth two of his disciples, 2and saith unto them, Go your way into the village that is over against you: and straightway as ye enter into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon no man ever yet sat; loose him, and bring him. 3And if any one say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye, The Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him back hither. 4And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door without in the open street; and they loose him. 5And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6And they said unto them even as Jesus had said: and they let them go. 7And they bring the colt unto Jesus, and cast on him their garments; and he sat upon him. 8And many spread their garments upon the way; and others branches, which they had cut from the fields.
9And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10Blessed is the kingdom that cometh, the kingdom of our father David: Hosanna in the highest.
11And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple; and when he had looked round about upon all things, it being now eventide, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
Luke 19 : The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9-13; Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; John 12:12-19)
28And when he had thus spoken, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.
29And it came to pass, when he drew nigh unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30saying, Go your way into the village over against you ; in which as ye enter ye shall find a colt tied, whereon no man ever yet sat: loose him, and bring him. 31And if any one ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say, The Lord hath need of him. 32And they that were sent went away, and found even as he had said unto them. 33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34And they said, The Lord hath need of him. 35And they brought him to Jesus: and they threw their garments upon the colt, and set Jesus thereon. 36And as he went, they spread their garments in the way. 37And as he was now drawing nigh, even at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen;
38saying, Blessed is the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39And some of the Pharisees from the multitude said unto him, Teacher, rebuke thy disciples. 40And he answered and said, I tell you that, if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem (Isaiah 29:1-16)
41And when he drew nigh, he saw the city and wept over it, 42saying, If thou hadst known in this day, even thou, the things which belong unto peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43For the days shall come upon thee, when thine enemies shall cast up a bank about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44and shall dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
John 12 : The Triumphal Entry
12On the morrow a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried out, Hosanna: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel. 14And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. 16These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 17The multitude therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, bare witness.18For this cause also the multitude went and met him, for that they heard that he had done this sign. 19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Behold how ye prevail nothing: lo, the world is gone after him.
Jesus Predicts His Death
20Now there were certain Greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast: 21these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: Andrew cometh, and Philip, and they tell Jesus. 23And Jesus answereth them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit. 25He that loveth his life loseth it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will the Father honor.
27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause came I unto this hour.28Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven,’saying , I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.29The multitude therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it had thundered: others said, An angel hath spoken to him.30Jesus answered and said, This voice hath not come for my sake, but for your sakes. 31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself. 33But this he said, signifying by what manner of death he should die. 34The multitude therefore answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35Jesus therefore said unto them, Yet a little while is the light among you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness overtake you not: and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. 36While ye have the light, believe on the light, that ye may become sons of light. These things spake Jesus, and he departed and hid himself from them.
The Unbelief of the People
37But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: 38that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?39For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again, 40He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart; Lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, And should turn, And I should heal them. 41These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory; and he spake of him.
Some Believe in Jesus
42Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it , lest they should be put out of the synagogue: 43for they loved the glory that is of men more than the glory that is of God.
44And Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45And he that beholdeth me beholdeth him that sent me. 46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness. 47And if any man hear my sayings, and keep them not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50And I know that his commandment is life eternal: the things therefore which I speak, even as the Father hath said unto me, so I speak.
John 13 : Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s’son , to betray him, 3Jesus , knowing that the Father had given all the things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God, 4riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself.
5Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter. 8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11For he knew him that should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you. 16Verily, verily, I say unto you, a servant is not greater than his lord; neither one that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple (Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45-48; John 2:12-25)
- 12And Jesus entered into the temple of God,
- and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple,
- and overthrew the tables of he money-changers,
- and the seats of them that sold the doves;
- 13and he saith unto them, It is written,
- My house shall be called a house of prayer:
- but ye make it a den of robbers.
- 14And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple;
- and he healed them.
- 15But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did,
- and the children that were crying in the temple and saying,
- Hosanna to the son of David;
- they were moved with indignation,
- and the children that were crying in the temple and saying,
- 16and said unto him,
- Hearest thou what these are saying?
- And Jesus saith unto them, Yea:
- did ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou has perfected praise?
- 17And he left them, and went forth out of the city to Bethany, and lodged there.
The Barren Fig Tree(Mark 11:12-14; Mark 11:20-26)
18Now in the morning as he returned to the city, he hungered.
19And seeing a fig tree by the way side, he came to it,
- and found nothing thereon,
- but leaves only;
- and he saith unto it,
- Let there be no fruit from thee henceforward for ever.
- And immediately the fig tree withered away.
- Let there be no fruit from thee henceforward for ever.
20And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying,
- How did the fig tree immediately wither away?
21And Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you,
- If ye have faith, and doubt not,
- ye shall not only do what is done to the fig tree,
- but even if ye shall say unto this mountain,
- Be thou taken up and cast into the sea,
- it shall be done.
- Be thou taken up and cast into the sea,
22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
- believing,
- ye shall receive.
Jesus’ Authority Challenged (Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8)
23And when he was come into the temple,
- the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching,
- and said, By what authority doest thou these things?
- and who gave thee this authority?
24And Jesus answered and said unto them,
- I also will ask you one question, which if ye tell me,
- I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
25The baptism of John, whence was it?
- from heaven or from men?
And they reasoned with themselves, saying,
- If we shall say, From heaven;
- he will say unto us, Why then did ye not believe him?
- 26But if we shall say, From men;
- we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.
27And they answered Jesus, and said,
- We know not.
- He also said unto them,
- Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28But what think ye? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in the vineyard. 29And he answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented himself, and went. 30And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go , sir: and went not. 31Which of the two did the will of his father? They say, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye saw it, did not even repent yourselves afterward, that ye might believe him.
The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-18)
33Hear another parable: There was a man that was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country. 34And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive his fruits. 35And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them in like manner. 37But afterward he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. 38But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance. 39And they took him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do unto those husbandmen? 41They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes?
43Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44And he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.
45And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. 46And when they sought to lay hold on him, they feared the multitudes, because they took him for a prophet.
Matthew 22 :
- Parable of Banquet
- Paying Taxes to Caesar
- Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one: for thou regardest not the person of men.
- 17Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
- 18But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?
- 22And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.
- Sadducees Question the Resurrection
- 29But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven. 31But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, 32I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. 33And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
- The Greatest Commandment
- Whose Son is Christ
- 41Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
- 42saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he?
- They say unto him, The son of David.
- 43He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
- 44The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet?
- 45If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son?
- 46And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
Matthew 27 : The Plot to Kill Jesus
1And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2You know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 3Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him. 5But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. 8But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. 10When Jesus understood it, he said to them, Why trouble you the woman? for she has worked a good work on me. 11For you have the poor always with you; but me you have not always. 12For in that she has poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.13Truly I say to you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman has done, be told for a memorial of her.
Mark 14 : Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on his head. 4And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 6And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble you her? she has worked a good work on me. 7For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you will you may do them good: but me you have not always. 8She has done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 9Truly I say to you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Bethany = “House of Dates”, or “House of Misery”
- 2 miles outside of Jerusalem on way to Jericho in a village in the Mount of Olives where John the Baptist Baptized
Alabaster Box = “a box made of alabaster in which unguents are preserved”
- The ancients considered alabaster to be the best material in which to preserve their ointments. Breaking the box, probably means breaking the seal of the box.
Spikenard = “nard, the head or spike of a fragrant East Indian plant belonging to the genus Valerianna, which yields a juice of delicious odour which the ancients used (either pure or mixed) in the preparation of a most precious ointment”
John 12 : Jesus Anointed by Mary
1Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. 4Then said one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bore what was put therein. 7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying has she kept this. 8For the poor always you have with you; but me you have not always.
Psalm 41 : Blessed is He who Considers the Poor
1Blessed is he that considers the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.
2The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed on the earth: and you will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, 15And said to them, What will you give me, and I will deliver him to you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. 16And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
Zechariah 11 : Thirty Pieces of Silver
10And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people.11And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited on me knew that it was the word of the LORD. 12And I said to them, If you think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13And the LORD said to me, Cast it to the potter: a goodly price that I was priced at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD. 14Then I cut asunder my other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
15And the LORD said to me, Take to you yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. 16For, see, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that stands still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.
17Woe to the idol shepherd that leaves the flock! the sword shall be on his arm, and on his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
The Last Supper
17Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, Where will you that we prepare for you to eat the passover? 18And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say to him, The Master said, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples. 19And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. 20Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. 21And as they did eat, he said, Truly I say to you, that one of you shall betray me. 22And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say to him, Lord, is it I? 23And he answered and said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 24The Son of man goes as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.25Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said to him, You have said.
Mark 14 : The Last Supper
12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said to him, Where will you that we go and prepare that you may eat the passover? 13And he sends forth two of his disciples, and said to them, Go you into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14And wherever he shall go in, say you to the manager of the house, The Master said, Where is the guest room, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said to them: and they made ready the passover.
17And in the evening he comes with the twelve. 18And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Truly I say to you, One of you which eats with me shall betray me. 19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?20And he answered and said to them, It is one of the twelve, that dips with me in the dish. 21The Son of man indeed goes, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
Luke 22 : The Last Supper
7Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 9And they said to him, Where will you that we pre pare? 10And he said to them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in. 11And you shall say to the manager of the house, The Master said to you, Where is the guest room, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 12And he shall show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13And they went, and found as he had said to them: and they made ready the passover.
John 13 : Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me. 19Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am he.20Truly, truly, I say to you, He that receives whomsoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me.
21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you shall betray me. 22Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. 23Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spoke. 25He then lying on Jesus’ breast said to him, Lord, who is it? 26Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, That you do, do quickly. 28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this to him. 29For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
The Lord’s Supper Instituted
26And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink you all of it; 28For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29But I say to you, I will not drink from now on of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
30And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Mark 14 : The Lord’s Supper Instituted
22And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.23And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24And he said to them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25Truly I say to you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
26And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Luke 22 : The Lord’s Supper Instituted
14And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16For I say to you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 21But, behold, the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table. 22And truly the Son of man goes, as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! 23And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
1 Corinthians 11 : Observing the Lord’s Supper
17Now in this that I declare to you I praise you not, that you come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18For first of all, when you come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 20When you come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21For in eating every one takes before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22What? have you not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise you the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
23For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered to you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24And when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do you, as oft as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you do show the Lord’s death till he come.
27Why whoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
33Why, my brothers, when you come together to eat, tarry one for another. 34And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that you come not together to condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31Then said Jesus to them, All you shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. 32But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. 33Peter answered and said to him, Though all men shall be offended because of you, yet will I never be offended. 34Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, That this night, before the cock crow, you shall deny me thrice. 35Peter said to him, Though I should die with you, yet will I not deny you. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Mark 14 : Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
27And Jesus said to them, All you shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. 28But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29But Peter said to him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. 30And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice. 31But he spoke the more vehemently, If I should die with you, I will not deny you in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
Luke 22 : Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brothers. 33And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death. 34And he said, I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall thrice deny that you know me.
35And he said to them, When I sent you without purse, and money, and shoes, lacked you any thing? And they said, Nothing.36Then said he to them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his money: and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37For I say to you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough.
John 13 : Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where go you? Jesus answered him, Where I go, you can not follow me now; but you shall follow me afterwards. 37Peter said to him, Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. 38Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for my sake? Truly, truly, I say to you, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied me thrice.
Jesus Prays at Gethsemane(Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46)
36Then comes Jesus with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, Sit you here, while I go and pray yonder. 37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38Then said he to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even to death: tarry you here, and watch with me.
39And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as you will. 40And he comes to the disciples, and finds them asleep, and said to Peter, What, could you not watch with me one hour? 41Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, your will be done. 43And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45Then comes he to his disciples, and said to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that does betray me.
Mark 14 : Jesus Prays at Gethsemane
32And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Sit you here, while I shall pray. 33And he takes with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; 34And said to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful to death: tarry you here, and watch. 35And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what you will. 37And he comes, and finds them sleeping, and said to Peter, Simon, sleep you? could not you watch one hour? 38Watch you and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. 39And again he went away, and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither knew they what to answer him. 41And he comes the third time, and said to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise up, let us go; see, he that betrays me is at hand.
John 22 : Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
39And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40And when he was at the place, he said to them, Pray that you enter not into temptation. 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done. 43And there appeared an angel to him from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46And said to them, Why sleep you? rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest(Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14)
47And while he yet spoke, see, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. 49And immediately he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. 50And Jesus said to him, Friend, why are you come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him.
51And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. 52Then said Jesus to him, Put up again your sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53Think you that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are you come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you laid no hold on me. 56But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Mark 14 : Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
43And immediately, while he yet spoke, comes Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. 45And as soon as he was come, he goes straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. 46And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 47And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48And Jesus answered and said to them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? 49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. 50And they all forsook him, and fled.
51And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: 52And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
Luke 22 : Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
47And while he yet spoke, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, Judas, betray you the Son of man with a kiss? 49When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said to him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51And Jesus answered and said, Suffer you thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be you come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? 53When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
John 18 : Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples. 3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, comes thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come on him, went forth, and said to them, Whom seek you? 5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6As soon then as he had said to them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then asked he them again, Whom seek you? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore you seek me, let these go their way: 9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Of them which you gave me have I lost none. 10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up your sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?
12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, 13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. 14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin
57And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58But Peter followed him afar off to the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. 59Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60But found none: yes, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, 61And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62And the high priest arose, and said to him, Answer you nothing? what is it which these witness against you? 63But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said to him, I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God. 64Jesus said to him, You have said: nevertheless I say to you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now you have heard his blasphemy. 66What think you? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. 67Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, 68Saying, Prophesy to us, you Christ, Who is he that smote you?
Isaiah 53 : The Suffering Servant
1Who has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was on him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. 8He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
Mark 14 : Jesus Before the Sanhedrin
53And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.54And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. 55And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. 56For many bore false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. 57And there arose certain, and bore false witness against him, saying, 58We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. 59But neither so did their witness agree together. 60And the high priest stood up in the middle, and asked Jesus, saying, Answer you nothing? what is it which these witness against you? 61But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62And Jesus said, I am: and you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 63Then the high priest rent his clothes, and said, What need we any further witnesses? 64You have heard the blasphemy: what think you? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. 65And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
John 18 : Jesus Before the High Priest
19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21Why ask you me? ask them which heard me, what I have said to them: behold, they know what I said. 22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answer you the high priest so? 23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smite you me? 24Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
1 Peter 2: Christ’s Example of Suffering
21For even hereunto were you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps: 22Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously: 24Who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live to righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed. 25For you were as sheep going astray; but are now returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
The Sanhedrin (Hebrew: סַנְהֶדְרִין sanhedrîn, Greek: Συνέδριον,[1] synedrion, “sitting together,” hence “assembly” or “council”) was an assembly of 23 to 71 men appointed in every city in the Land of Israel. In the Hebrew Bible,[2] Moses and the Israelites were commanded by God to establish courts of judges who were given full authority over the people of Israel, who were commanded by God to obey every word the judges instructed and every law they established. Judges in ancient Israel were the religious leaders and Teachers of the nation of Israel. The Mishnah[3] arrives at the number twenty-three based on an exegetical derivation: it must be possible for a “community” to vote for both conviction and exoneration.[4] The minimum size of a “community” is 10 men[5] (10 vs 10). One more is required to achieve a majority (11 vs 10), but a simple majority cannot convict,[6] and so an additional judge is required (12 vs 10). Finally, a court should not have an even number of judges to prevent deadlocks; thus 23 (12 vs 10 and 1). This court dealt with only religious matters.
The Great Sanhedrin was made up of a Nasi (President), who functioned as head or representing president, and was a member of the court, an Av Beit Din, the chief of the court who was second to the nasi, and sixty-nine general members (Mufla).[7] In the Second Temple period, the Great Sanhedrin met in the Hall of Hewn Stones in the Temple in Jerusalem. The court convened every day except festivals and Shabbat.
Peter Denies Jesus
69Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came to him, saying, You also were with Jesus of Galilee. 70But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what you say. 71And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said to them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. 72And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. 73And after a while came to him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them; for your speech denudes you. 74Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. 75And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said to him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
Mark 14 : Peter Denies Jesus
66And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there comes one of the maids of the high priest: 67And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked on him, and said, And you also were with Jesus of Nazareth. 68But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. 69And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. 70And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilaean, and your speech agrees thereto. 71But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom you speak. 72And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said to him, Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
Luke 22 : Peter Denies Jesus
54Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off. 55And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked on him, and said, This man was also with him. 57And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58And after a little while another saw him, and said, You are also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. 60And Peter said, Man, I know not what you say. And immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew. 61And the Lord turned, and looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me thrice. 62And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
John 18 : Peter’s First Denial
15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known to the high priest, and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. 17Then said the damsel that kept the door to Peter, Are not you also one of this man’s disciples? He said, I am not. 18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
Matthew 27 : Judas Hangs Himself
3Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that. 5And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8Why that field was called, The field of blood, to this day. 9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
Zechariah 11 : A Man among the Myrtle Trees
7On the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD to Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 8I saw by night, and behold a man riding on a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white. 9Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said to me, I will show you what these be. 10And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD has sent to walk to and fro through the earth. 11And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sits still, and is at rest.
Mercy Promised to Jerusalem
12Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long will you not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which you have had indignation these 70 years? 13And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words. 14So the angel that communed with me said to me, Cry you, saying, Thus said the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. 15And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.16Therefore thus said the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, said the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth on Jerusalem. 17Cry yet, saying, Thus said the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
Mark 14 : Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
10And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.
Jesus Before Pilate (Luke 23:1-6; John 18:28-40)
11And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say. 12And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13Then said Pilate to him, Hear you not how many things they witness against you? 14And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor marveled greatly.
Luke 23 : Jesus Before Pilate
1And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 3And Pilate asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, You say it. 4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. 5And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
Jesus Before Herod
7And as soon as he knew that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
8And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. 10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. 11And Herod with his men of war set him at nothing, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. 12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
John 18 : Jesus Before Pilate
28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 29Pilate then went out to them, and said, What accusation bring you against this man? 30They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to you. 31Then said Pilate to them, Take you him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: 32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34Jesus answered him, Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell it you of me? 35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you to me: what have you done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37Pilate therefore said to him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. 38Pilate said to him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, I find in him no fault at all. 39But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the passover: will you therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews? 40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
The Crowd Chooses Barabbas(Mark 15:6-11; Luke 23:13-25)
15Now at that feast the governor was wont to release to the people a prisoner, whom they would. 16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. 19When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have you nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21The governor answered and said to them, Whether of the two will you that I release to you? They said, Barabbas. 22Pilate said to them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say to him, Let him be crucified. 23And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
Luke 23 : The Crowd Chooses Barabbas
13And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14Said to them, You have brought this man to me, as one that perverts the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him: 15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, see, nothing worthy of death is done to him. 16I will therefore chastise him, and release him. 17(For of necessity he must release one to them at the feast.)
18And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas: 19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) 20Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. 21But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. 22And he said to them the third time, Why, what evil has he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. 23And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. 24And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. 25And he released to them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
Mark 15 : The Crowd Chooses Barabbas
6Now at that feast he released to them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. 7And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done to them. 9But Pilate answered them, saying, Will you that I release to you the King of the Jews? 10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. 11But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
Pilate Washes his Hands (Mark 15:12-15)
24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see you to it. 25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. 26Then released he Barabbas to them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Mark 15 : Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
12And Pilate answered and said again to them, What will you then that I shall do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?13And they cried out again, Crucify him. 14Then Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him. 15And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas to them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(Isaiah 50:4-11; Mark 15:16-20; Luke 22:63-65; John 19:1-15)
27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered to him the whole band of soldiers. 28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30And they spit on him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
Isaiah 50 : God Helps His Servant
1Thus says the LORD,
“Where is the certificate of divorce
By which I have sent your mother away?
Or to whom of My creditors did I sell you?
Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, ( Joseph was sold into slavery )
And for your transgressions your mother was sent away.2“Why was there no man when I came?
When I called, why was there none to answer?
Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom?
Or have I no power to deliver?
Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke,
I make the rivers a wilderness;
Their fish stink for lack of water
And die of thirst.3“I clothe the heavens with blackness
And make sackcloth their covering.”4The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples,
That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.5The Lord GOD has opened My ear;
And I was not disobedient
Nor did I turn back.6I gave My back to those who strike Me,
And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;
I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.7For the Lord GOD helps Me,
Therefore, I am not disgraced;
Therefore, I have set My face like flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.8He who vindicates Me is near;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us stand up to each other;
Who has a case against Me?
Let him draw near to Me.9Behold, the Lord GOD helps Me;
Who is he who condemns Me?
Behold, they will all wear out like a garment;
The moth will eat them.10Who is among you that fears the LORD,
That obeys the voice of His servant,
That walks in darkness and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.11Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
Who encircle yourselves with firebrands,
Walk in the light of your fire
And among the brands you have set ablaze.
This you will have from My hand:
You will lie down in torment.Mark 15 : The Soldiers Mock Jesus
16And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. 17And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit on him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Luke 22 : The Soldiers Mock Jesus
63And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? 65And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him.
John 19 : The Soldiers Mock Jesus
1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. 4Pilate therefore went forth again, and said to them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him. 5Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Behold the man! 6When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Take you him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. 7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; 9And went again into the judgment hall, and said to Jesus, From where are you? But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Then said Pilate to him, Speak you not to me? know you not that I have power to crucify you, and have power to release you? 11Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against me, except it were given you from above: therefore he that delivered me to you has the greater sin. 12And from thereafter Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar’s friend: whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.
13When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he said to the Jews, Behold your King! 15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
The Crucifixion (Psalm 69:1-36; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43; John 19:16-27)
32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33And when they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and on my clothing did they cast lots. 36And sitting down they watched him there; 37And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40And saying, You that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,42He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
Psalm 69 : The Waters Have Come Up to My Neck!
1Save me, O God; for the waters are come in to my soul. 2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 3I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: my eyes fail while I wait for my God. 4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away. 5O God, you know my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from you. 6Let not them that wait on you, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek you be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. 7Because for your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face. 8I am become a stranger to my brothers, and an alien to my mother’s children. 9For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached you are fallen on me. 10When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. 11I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them. 12They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. 13But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of your mercy hear me, in the truth of your salvation. 14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. 15Let not the flood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth on me. 16Hear me, O LORD; for your loving kindness is good: turn to me according to the multitude of your tender mercies. 17And hide not your face from your servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily. 18Draw near to my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of my enemies. 19You have known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor: my adversaries are all before you. 20Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. 21They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. 22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. 23Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake. 24Pour out your indignation on them, and let your wrathful anger take hold of them. 25Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. 26For they persecute him whom you have smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom you have wounded. 27Add iniquity to their iniquity: and let them not come into your righteousness. 28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous. 29But I am poor and sorrowful: let your salvation, O God, set me up on high. 30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. 31This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that has horns and hoofs. 32The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. 33For the LORD hears the poor, and despises not his prisoners. 34Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moves therein. 35For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession. 36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
Mark 15 :The Crucifixion
21And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
22And they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. 23And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. 24And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots on them, what every man should take. 25And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. 28And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, And he was numbered with the transgressors. 29And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, you that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, 30Save yourself, and come down from the cross. 31Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 32Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
Luke 23 : The Crucifixion
26And as they led him away, they laid hold on one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
27And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28But Jesus turning to them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts which never gave suck. 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. 35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37And saying, If you be the king of the Jews, save yourself. 38And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If you be Christ, save yourself and us. 40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Do not you fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation? 41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man has done nothing amiss. 42And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 43And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, To day shall you be with me in paradise.
John 19 : The Crucifixion
16Then delivered he him therefore to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. 19And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said, They parted my raiment among them, and for my clothing they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son! 27Then said he to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
The Death of Jesus(Psalm 22:1-31; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:28-30)
45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour. 46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calls for Elias. 48And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many. 54Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him: 56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
Psalm 22 : Psalm of the Cross
1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? 2O my God, I cry in the day time, but you hear not; and in the night season, and am not silent. 3But you are holy, O you that inhabit the praises of Israel. 4Our fathers trusted in you: they trusted, and you did deliver them. 5They cried to you, and were delivered: they trusted in you, and were not confounded. 6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. 9But you are he that took me out of the womb: you did make me hope when I was on my mother’s breasts. 10I was cast on you from the womb: you are my God from my mother’s belly. 11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13They gaped on me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the middle of my bowels. 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue sticks to my jaws; and you have brought me into the dust of death. 16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare on me. 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots on my clothing. 19But be not you far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste you to help me. 20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21Save me from the lion’s mouth: for you have heard me from the horns of the unicorns. 22I will declare your name to my brothers: in the middle of the congregation will I praise you. 23You that fear the LORD, praise him; all you the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all you the seed of Israel. 24For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither has he hid his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard. 25My praise shall be of you in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. 26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. 27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before you. 28For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations. 29All they that be fat on earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. 30A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, that he has done this.
Mark 15 : The Death of Jesus
33And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 35And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calls Elias. 36And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. 37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. 39And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
40There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him;) and many other women which came up with him to Jerusalem.
Luke 23 : The Death of Jesus
44And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the middle. 46And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
John 19 : The Death of Jesus
28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst. 29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it on hyssop, and put it to his mouth.30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
The Burial of Jesus
57When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: 58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher, and departed. 61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulcher.
Isaiah 53 : Suffering Servant
9His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.10But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.11As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.12Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.Mark 42 : The Burial of Jesus
42And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honorable counselor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly to Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. 44And Pilate marveled if he were already dead: and calling to him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. 45And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. 46And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulcher which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the sepulcher. 47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
Luke 23 : The Burial of Jesus
50And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just: 51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. 52This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. 53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. 54And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. 55And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid. 56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
John 19 : The Burial of Jesus
38And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, sought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. 40Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was never man yet laid. 42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulcher was near at hand.
The Guard at the Tomb
62Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate, 63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65Pilate said to them, You have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as you can. 66So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
Matthew 28 : The Resurrection (Psalm 16:1-11; Psalm 49:1-20; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-9)
1In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher. 2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5And the angel answered and said to the women, Fear not you: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: see, I have told you.
8And they departed quickly from the sepulcher with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. 9And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10Then said Jesus to them, Be not afraid: go tell my brothers that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
Psalm 16 : Practicing the Presence of God
1Preserve me, O God: for in you do I put my trust. 2O my soul, you have said to the LORD, You are my Lord: my goodness extends not to you; 3But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. 4Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. 5The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: you maintain my lot. 6The lines are fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a goodly heritage. 7I will bless the LORD, who has given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10For you will not leave my soul in hell; neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption. 11You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for ever more.
Psalm 49 : The Transiency of the Wealth
1Hear this, all you people; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world: 2Both low and high, rich and poor, together. 3My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. 4I will incline my ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying on the harp. 5Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about? 6They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; 7None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: 8(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceases for ever:) 9That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption. 10For he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. 11Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. 12Nevertheless man being in honor stays not: he is like the beasts that perish. 13This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah. 14Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling. 15But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. 16Be not you afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; 17For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. 18Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when you do well to yourself. 19He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. 20Man that is in honor, and understands not, is like the beasts that perish.
The Report of the Guards
11Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and showed to the chief priests all the things that were done. 12And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money to the soldiers,13Saying, Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
The Great Commission (Mark 16:14-18)
16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded you: and, see, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.
Mark 16 : The Resurrection (Psalm 16:1-11; Psalm 49:1-20; Matthew 28:1-10; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-9)
1And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, they come to the tomb when the sun was risen. 3And they were saying among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the tomb? 4and looking up, they see that the stone is rolled back: for it was exceeding great. 5And entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, arrayed in a white robe; and they were amazed. 6And he saith unto them, Be not amazed: ye seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who hath been crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold, the place where they laid him! 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. 8And they went out, and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them: and they said nothing to any one; for they were afraid.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
9Now when he was risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10She went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11And they, when they heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, disbelieved.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12And after these things he was manifested in another form unto two of them, as they walked, on their way into the country.13And they went away and told it unto the rest: neither believed they them.
The Great Commission
14And afterward he was manifested unto the eleven themselves as they sat at meat; and he upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them that had seen him after he was risen. 15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned. 17And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
The Ascension
19So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken unto them, was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.20And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.
Luke 24 : The Resurrection
1Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. 3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why seek you the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke to you when he was yet in Galilee,7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8And they remembered his words, 9And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things to the apostles. 11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12Then arose Peter, and ran to the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
The Road to Emmaus
13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about three score furlongs. 14And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16But their eyes were held that they should not know him. 17And he said to them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? 18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said to him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher; 23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
Jesus Explains the Prophecies
25Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
28And they drew near to the village, where they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and broke, and gave to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? 33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. 35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
36And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the middle of them, and said to them, Peace be to you. 37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. 38And he said to them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have. 40And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have you here any meat? 42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. 43And he took it, and did eat before them.
Jesus Opens the Meaning of Scriptures
44And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46And said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48And you are witnesses of these things. 49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father on you: but tarry you in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high.
The Ascension
50And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. 52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
John 20 : The Resurrection
1The first day of the week comes Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, to the sepulcher, and sees the stone taken away from the sepulcher. 2Then she runs, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. 3Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher. 4So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. 5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6Then comes Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and sees the linen clothes lie, 7And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher, and he saw, and believed. 9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
10Then the disciples went away again to their own home.11But Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher, 12And sees two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13And they say to her, Woman, why weep you? She said to them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him. 14And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, Woman, why weep you? whom seek you? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, Sir, if you have borne him hence, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. 16Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned herself, and said to him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17Jesus said to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brothers, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the LORD, and that he had spoken these things to her.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the middle, and said to them, Peace be to you. 20And when he had so said, he showed to them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the LORD. 21Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be to you: as my Father has sent me, even so send I you. 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive you the Holy Ghost: 23Whose soever sins you remit, they are remitted to them; and whose soever sins you retain, they are retained.
Jesus Appears to Thomas
24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the LORD. But he said to them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26And after 8 days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the middle, and said, Peace be to you. 27Then said he to Thomas, Reach here your finger, and behold my hands; and reach here your hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28And Thomas answered and said to him, My LORD and my God. 29Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
The Purpose of John’s Book
30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name.
